Can Information from a Public Meeting be Leaked to the Public?
ByAt tһіѕ past Tuesday’s Nеw Richmond School District Long Range PƖаחחіחɡ Commission meeting, tһе Chair allegedly ѕаіԁ tһе following аt tһе opening οf tһе session:
“Sοmе one іח tһіѕ group іѕ doing tһе leaking. I tһіחk іt іѕ someone іח tһе group bесаυѕе tһе next day іt іѕ οח tһе blog”.
Leaking frοm a public meeting? Iѕ tһаt possible? Here іѕ һοw tһе law reads:
WI Statute 19.81
(1) Iח recognition οf tһе fact tһаt a representative government οf tһе American type іѕ dependent upon аח informed electorate, іt іѕ declared tο bе tһе policy οf tһіѕ state tһаt tһе public іѕ entitled tο tһе fullest аחԁ mοѕt complete information regarding tһе affairs аѕ іѕ compatible wіtһ tһе conduct οf government business.
(2) Tο implement аחԁ ensure tһе public policy herein expressed, аƖƖ meetings οf tһе state аחԁ local governmental bodies shall bе publicly held іח places reasonably accessible tο member οf tһе public аחԁ shall bе open tο аƖƖ citizens аt аƖƖ times unless otherwise expressly provide bу law.
Iѕ such statement аbουt “leaking” frοm a public meeting necessary?

There is no such thing as leaking from a public meeting.
Nobody is leaking anything, Masked Marvel. Since you used the word allegedly in your post I assume you weren’t at the meeting. There were no people at the January 31st Last Long Range Planning Meeting othere than members of the committee and school staff.
Scott Needham used the word leak and I knew exactly what he meant. All the persons in the conference room were interested in the discussion and I can think of no one wishing to spew out information in such a negative way the very next day. I too have concerns about some of the proposals, but will refrain judgement until the final recommendations are made.
As for your references to WI statute 19.81, what’s your point? These meetings are open to the public and as you will note in my early post, you have been invited to the Feb, 8th LRPC meeting at 6:30pm in the NR School administration building. Get it first hand.
Sounds a bit like attempting to intimidate those at the meeting.
What would be the purpose for this?
Instead of accusing committee members of “leaking” information, the Chair should have stressed that all committee business is conducted in the light of day and it would have been in the best interest of the committee to stress that its members are welcome and encouraged to relay information to the public. Why try to undermine a free and open government? It only makes them look like the Hudson School Board and Annette Cook, which is not very becoming.
Why would anyone be imtimidated by the public attending a public meeting Ethel?
Does the hand picked committee have a hidden agenda the the public should know about?
Would “those” people feel uncomfortable of others watching every move they made?
Sounds to me like maybe the Chair is in the wrong job.
Well Jack, I seet this invitation to be a chance for you to attend the meeting- take good notes & then report away! Lets see how good your shorthand is.
It would be benificial to the rest who are unable to attend those meetings to get a complete update from start to finish & not just the hot gossip for the moment. And just so all can know some little facts about Jack Bauer – you are not the most wanted man alive. Just love you in 24. Can I have your autograph?
Upon hearing that he was played by Kiefer Sutherland, Jack Bauer killed Sutherland. Jack Bauer gets played by no man.
I wouln’t want everyone to know who I am cuz they’d go after my kids. Why I might even get the raw end of the deal with police matters.
In light of the Chair’s desire to keep information at an open meeting from members of the public from learning about the proceedings, perhaps he could suggest Simple Plan’s song SHUT UP as the theme song of the Long Range Planning Commission.
Here are the lyrics:
There you go
You’re always so right
It’s all a big show
It’s all about you
You think you know
What everyone needs
You always take time
To criticize me
It seems like everyday
I make mistakes
I just can’t get it right
It’s like I’m the one
You love to hate
But not today
So shut up, shut up, shut up
Don’t wanna hear it
Get out, get out, get out
Get out of my way
Step up, step up, step up
You’ll never stop me
Nothing you say today
Is gonna bring me down
There you go
You never ask why
It’s all a big lie
Whatever you do
You think you’re special
But I know, and I know
And I know, and we know
That you’re not
You’re always there to point
Out my mistakes
And shove them in my face
It’s like I’m the one
You love to hate
But not today
So shut up, shut up, shut up
Don’t wanna hear it
Get out, get out, get out
Get out of my way
Step up, step up, step up
You’ll never stop me
Nothing you say today
Is gonna bring me down
Is gonna bring me down
Will never bring me down
Don’t tell me who I should be
And don’t try to tell me what’s right for me
Don’t tell me what I should do
I don’t wanna waste my time
I’ll watch you fade away
So shut up, shut up, shut up
Don’t wanna hear it
Get out, get out, get out
Get out of my way
Step up, step up, step up
You’ll never stop me
Nothing you say today
Is gonna bring me down
Shut up, shut up, shut up
Don’t wanna hear it
Get out, get out, get out
Get out of my way
Step up, step up, step up
You’ll never stop me
Nothing you say today
Is gonna bring me down
Bring me down
{shut up, shut up, shut up}
Won’t bring me down
{shut up, shut up, shut up}
Bring me down
{shut up, shut up, shut up}
Won’t bring me down
Shut up, shut up, shut up
Seriously? It completely stuns me that the message Scott Needham was sending evades your understanding. I”ve never read about any of the meetings being closed to the public, nor has anyone ever said that the information discussed or decided upon was to be hidden from the public. In fact, all I”ve ever heard reported from members of the committee is that they have the freedom to initiate any conversation at any time AND even the suggestion of a hidden agenda offended Mr. Needham (a man who is an objective ‘judge’ professionally) so much he vowed to disband the committee if anyone on the committee truly believed that were true. In fact, the only reason any topic would have been postponed to the next meeting is for the purpose of gathering and distributing information to share with the participants so everyone is armed with the facts and can best discuss whatever has been proposed. I understand that the frustration Mr. Needham feels stems from the fact that a member of the committee is choosing not to voice their issues/concerns within the environment most equipped to actually ACT on those concerns and discuss them; instead they are publicly implying an inability to openly express themselves within that environment. Anyone with any concerns about the process has the freedom to contact any of the members on the committee to share those concerns. Needham is just trying to do what he can to help the group move forward, focus on positive discussion, and problem-solve. The committee has enough obstacles to work through to have to deal with a Monday morning quarterback. Get on the field and play the day of the game – you”re doing the folks on your side a disservice by not representing them in these meetings. I think the message was not to “Shut Up” as Ethel puts it, but to “Express Yourself” where it really matters.
[...] Clio brought up some interesting retorts to some of the commentary in the post titled, “Can Information from a Public Meeting be Leaked to the Public? See her comment here.. I thought I would answer it in a new post and also ask some questions of her and the Committee. [...]
