The European Union appears on the brink of crumbling apart under the burden of sovereign debt created by bloated governments, a burdensome public employee pension system, and corporate bailouts. Greece is sure to default on its sovereign liabilities with Italy, Portugal, Ireland, and Spain soon to follow suit. Germany considered the productive stalwart of the union risks being dragged under in the financial riptide. Rumors are also flying that French banks have insurmountable debt exposure on their balance sheets. France may also face a day of reckoning in the near future.

Breaking Away

Open talk now exists on the continent about the dissolution of the union. Even in regions of the separate member states discussions have started about secession from the host. The productive northern Italy is talking about breaking from the southern welfare states. In the Catalane region of Spain, where Barcelona is located, the rumblings of secession have been heard.

The Europeans apparently have discovered that nothing is sacred about a piece of paper tying one set of people to another. Marriages can be dissolved, contracts can be shredded by one party not honoring the terms of the agreement, and promises can be broken. No natural law exists that states a union is permanent.

Europe is breaking apart because the productive no longer want to be weighted down by non-worker, workers in government and the others looking for handouts. I have often stated that the time has come for a divorce in this country. No benefit outweighs the cost of supporting a growing government class or those that pick the pockets of their neighbors in the name of the common good.

This is the one time we should follow Europe’s lead.

At the end of the movie Tora, Tora, Tora, Admiral Yamamoto reflects on the news that despite two separate waves of bombing on Pearl Harbor the Japanese assault failed to find and destroy the American carriers. The Japanese Admiral says “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”

This supposed quote from Yamamoto has resonated with me today after the government union thugs failed in the mission of their recall elections to wrestle control from the Republican majority in the state Senate. Beginning in January, we have witnessed all colors of government union non-worker, workers from government teachers to police to bureaucrats engage in tactics fitting for a warring hoarde. They tried their best to intimidate the taxpayers through extortion, threats of violence, destruction of property, and importing socialist goons to disrupt peaceful rallies.

What should now be clear is that these government union thugs are not your friends, or your neighbor, or the fabric of a community. Make no mistake, the government non-worker, workers with Shelly Moore as their commander declared war on us. It is time for the sleeping giants in Wisconsin to mete out their vengeance.

The parents and school board in Ellsworth do not need a socialist like Shelly Moore teaching or having influence on the children of that district or for that matter anywhere in this state or country. She needs to be fired.

Government teachers around the state should be put on notice that union activity has no place in a dwelling reserved for education. Failure to adhere to this policy is grounds for immediate dismissal and forfeiture of all licenses

The state legislature and Governor can set parents and taxpayers free from government education goons by passing immediately in the next session an education tax credit or education voucher bill. The legislation will be the nuclear event to end forever the tyrannical grip on Wisconsin students.

The people declaring war do not deserve one penny of our income. The Governor with the approval of the legislature should immediately eliminate half of the non-worker, workers in the state including police, sheriff deputies, and state troopers that did little to protect us in the face of mobs. Police that have nothing better to do than spend their days patrolling the streets for seat-belt violations need to find another vocation. Speaking of which, the legislature needs to repeal the seat-belt law along with smoking bans; both invade the right of private property.

The government union thugs started the war. In parallel to the Japanese Navy, last night was their Pearl Harbor. The question yet to be seen is whether the taxpayers and the Republican controlled government in Madison will have their Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

This post was originally attributed to an article by Walter Williams. As “One Guy” pointed out, Williams did not write the piece. Regardless who wrote it, I still believe the logic is sound. The reasoning boils down to two unfortunate facts about modern day America. Many in society fall into the category of thieves where voting is an act of selecting the stick-up guy and the bag man (Take a good look at the people that have Shelly Moore signs in their yards). Thieves are divided into two subsets: govewrnment non-worker, workers and those that sustain their daily lives or businesses by taking from others.

The other portion of the electorate not classified as thieves are too stupid to form any logical thought processes. This is the true legacy of government run education from kindergarten through college. The inability to think passes from teacher to student.

We are done!

Can President Obama be defeated in 2012? No. He can’t. I am going on record as saying that President Barak Obama will win a second term.

The media won’t tell you this because a good election campaign means hundreds of millions (or in Obama’s case billions) of dollars to them in advertising.

But the truth is, there simply are no conditions under which Barak Obama can be defeated in 2012.

The quality of the Republican candidate doesn’t matter. Obama gets reelected. Nine percent unemployment? No problem. Obama will win. Gas pricesmoving toward five dollars a gallon? He still wins. The economy soars or goes into the gutter. Obama wins. War in the Middle East? He wins a second term.

America’s role as the leading Superpower disappears? Hurrah for Barak Obama! The U.S. government rushes toward bankruptcy, the dollar continues to sink on world markets and the price of daily goods and services soars due to inflation fueled by Obama’s extraordinary deficit spending? Obama wins handily.

You are crazy Williams. Don’t you understand how volatile politics can be when overall economic, government, and world conditions are declining? Sure I do.

And that’s why I know Obama will win. The American people are notoriously ignorant of economics. And economics is the key to why Obama should be defeated.

Even when Obama’s policies lead the nation to final ruin, the majority of the American people are going to believe the bait-and-switch tactics Obama and his supporters in the media will use to explain why it isn’t his fault. After all, things were much worse than understood when he took office.

Obama’s reelection is really a very, very simple math problem. Consider the following:

1) Blacks will vote for Obama blindly. Period. Doesn’t matter what he does. It’s a race thing. He’s one of us,

  2) College educated women will vote for Obama. Though they will be offended by this, they swoon at his oratory. It’s really not more complex than that,

3) Liberals will vote for Obama. He is their great hope,

4) Democrats will vote for Obama. He is the leader of their party and his coat tails will carry them to victory nationwide,

5) Hispanics will vote for Obama. He is the path to citizenship for those who are illegal and Hispanic leaders recognize the political clout they carry in the Democratic Party,

6) Union members will vote overwhelmingly for Obama. He is their key to money and power in business, state and local politics,

7) Big Business will support Obama. They already have. He has almost $1 Billion dollars in his reelection purse gained largely from his connections with Big Business and is gaining more everyday. Big Business loves Obama because he gives them access to taxpayer money so long as they support his social and political agenda,

The media love him. They may attack the people who work for him, but they love him. After all, to not love him would be racist,

9) Most other minorities and special interest groups will vote for him. Oddly, the overwhelming majority of Jews and Muslims will support him because they won’t vote Republican. American Indians will support him. Obviously homosexuals tend to vote Democratic. And lastly,

Of course to the collectivists that support all types of government spending, the answer to budget shortfalls only have one solution; more taxes or as we now say here in western Wisconsin, Moore taxes.

Over the course of the last several weeks, the socialists at the national and state and local government levels have proposed raising gas taxes, taxing the internet, increasing taxes on the rich, and even taxing the miles you drive. I find the last idea rather humorous since many of the socialist have dribbled for years about fuel efficient cars, electric cars, and public transportation. Only a statist could not have foreseen the impact on tax receipts from such fantasies.

What is obviously coming our way in the near future is a national sales tax, which I would support if it included the elimination of all other forms of taxation. But I believe any proposed national sales tax may come with a wrinkle that is akin to redistribution among the states. This is the subject of tonight’s Sunday Night Snippet.

The idea being floated in the Democratic cloakrooms was similar to the principle (if it could be called that) of equalization that was used in minimum wage laws and the recently enacted union laws. Armed with “we are all in this together mentality”, it was reasoned that individuals living within the boundaries of certain states had benefited from living in a state where income taxes did not exist or they were far below that of other states. In essence, these individuals had in a round-about way had avoided taxes. The obstacle in presenting such an idea to the American public was two-fold: First, it was unconstitutional to tax the citizens of one state differently than those of another; and secondly, many people in private industries had their 401ks take a major financial hit. It would be hard to drum up much sympathy for a government worker, when the rest of the country now faced uncertainty over personal finances.

“Wait a second”, exclaimed Tony, an aid to the Democrat Senator from Illinois. “The tax code does treat individuals from different states unequal. State income taxes are deductible, right? For instance an individual earning $100,000 in the state of Wisconsin pays for rounding purposes a state income tax rate of 6% or $6,000 in state taxes. This same individual files a federal 1040 return that allows a deduction of $6,000 for state and local taxes paid. On the other hand, an individual from Texas who earns $100,000 pays no state income taxes, and therefore receives no deduction on their form 1040. Effectively, the federal tax on two like individuals from two different states is unequal. Why not devise a similar plan using the deduction of state and local taxes to put a heavier burden on those from states with little or no state income taxes.”

“You know that may just be the answer, Harry”, the Senator nodded at the majority leader. “But we need to find another tax vehicle and somehow intertwine it with the income tax.”

Leaning into the discussion with one of those political smiles that says “we got them”, Vice-President Biden added, “What have the conservatives been clamoring for all these years, a flat tax. Suppose we propose a national value-added-tax with the promise of phasing out the income tax in ten years. The receipts from this tax will be dedicated to prop up the insolvent government retirement programs and public employee pension accounts. In order to sell this to the people in relatively high-taxed states, we include a mathematical maze that gives a deduction based on the state income tax rate. This way the burden will fall onto those who pay little or no state income taxes. It gives most everyone what they want; the conservatives get their flat-tax and government employee pensions are at least partially satisfied. The only people who will bitch are just a handful states.”

Ignoring the fact that it is a political rarity to implement a tax that truly ever was temporary, some Republican stalwarts of the flat-tax did indeed join in the drafting of a national sales tax with the belief that in a few years the federal income tax would cease to exist. Touted as a historic achievement of bipartisanship, the national sales tax met little resistance through the committee process where the bill was crafted. The proposed benefits of the bill were fairly easy selling points in that as had been pointed out earlier, there was something for almost everyone. The main features of the new tax bill were:

1. Proceeds would help the government keep its pension promises to current retirees and those in the near future.

2. In seven years the federal income tax would be phased out.

The national sales tax at first would be set at 8% on all goods and services except for food purchases (not at an eating establishment), medical care, and prescriptions. Once the federal income tax was phased out the sales tax would increase to 15%.

3. To help ease the burden of this additional tax there would be a formula for an offset deduction on federal taxes based on the state income tax rates for where one resides. The simplified formula would multiply the individual state’s top tax rate multiplied by 7, and then this percentage would be multiplied versus the sales tax calculator for bracketed income levels which would then result in the deduction allowed up to a maximum $20,000. So for instance a resident of Minnesota where the top tax rate is 7% would have an initial multiplier of 49%. With an income of $100,000, the sales tax calculator would determine that this individual would spend $4,000 in national sales taxes. Therefore the individual would take a deduction of $4,000 off their gross income when filing form 1040. Clearly the deduction becomes larger for those who live in higher tax state; those who pay no state income tax receive no deduction.

Heated words between Senator Chuck Schumer of New York and representatives of Texas demonstrates the divide in our country.

War of Words

In tonight’s edition of Sunday Night Snippet, the governors of several states get into a battle of words. Unknown to others, the Governors of Mississippi and Vermont concoct a plan to stir the pot.

The Mississippi leadership chirped about how the perversions of the Massachusetts citizenry threatened to lead the country down a road of decadence. From the Texas executive mansion came hints that special taxes by states like Wisconsin could face retaliation from Texas oil companies, which would limit available supply to particular regions of the country. Even the Governor of Vermont got into the act when he responded to Mississippi’s comment concerning perversion, “If anybody can be considered an expert on perverted behavior, it would be the people of Mississippi where nine out of ten marriages are between brothers and sisters or close cousins.” The Mississippi governor fired back, “that the marriages in Mississippi involve a man and a women, at least you can tell the difference between the bride and the groom.” He also referenced the fact that no town in Mississippi had ever petitioned to join another state. The two warring governors, who had collaborated at Yellowstone, talked for an hour on the phone that evening and laughed at the utter disgust displayed by the media over their insulting exchanges. They also planned Act II of their political theater.

Meanwhile the atmosphere in Washington D.C. was growing more acrimonious with each passing day. One morning as the Senators filed in toward their desks on the Senate floor it was discovered that a tin cup, dark glasses, and a white cane had been placed at the spots occupied by the Senators from New Jersey, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Wisconsin; a white label was taped to the tin cup where the word BEGGAR was written. It did not take long for this historically great deliberative body to break down into something reminiscent of a World Wrestling melee. Television cameras showed the nation and the world live action of red-faced senators standing toe-to-toe screaming, flailing arm gestures, and an occasional chest thump. After some semblance of order had been restored to the chamber, one of the Senators from Oklahoma gave the pot one last stir when he began throwing quarters into each cup. Naturally this started another round of outcry from the offended Senators and their political allies. Whatever discussions were to be held on the senate docket would have to be postponed until opposing Senators could collect themselves in a calm and civil manner; on the opposite side of rotunda, similar arguments and near fisticuffs rose to surface in the House of Representative.

It now seemed that the Preamble to the Constitution promise of domestic tranquility was being threatened by an increasing ferociousness in a war of words. The White House realized that this situation could possibly result in a perception by the public as a sign of political weakness and decided to step in as the great mediator. The President put forth the idea that he would hold a series of meetings that would bring together state leaders and members of Congress in an effort to peacefully resolve any differences. In the minds of some, these meetings would become an opportunity for even more mischief. Abhorred by the tone of their almost daily jousting, the White House invited the governors of Vermont and Mississippi along with several others to the first meeting.

The weather on June 2nd could not have been more splendid for the photo opportunities of the President, flanked on either side by a handful of the nation’s governors, addressing the nation in the Rose Garden. Basked in sunshine and political opportunism, the President promised the nation that with his help, these governors standing behind him would renew their commitment to the people of their states and to the country. He also assured the country that heated words are a sign of healthy democracy. Though the moment opened the door for mischief, the governors involved in secession talks felt that any action of indignation would better be left for the evening’s entertainment at dinner. After daylong talks, the governors gave every indication that peace had been achieved among them.

In case you had not realized it, the tax filing deadline of April 15th has been shoved to April 18th for the Washinton D.C. celebration of Emancipation Day. This April marks the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the War Between the States ( despite the history books it was not a war about the overthrow of the government in Washington D.C.). Of course this year’s celebration has nothing to do with the South’s attempt at freedom from the over reaching federal government and the tyrant Lincoln.

Washinton D.C. historians rarely get events correct. The revered emancipation only pertained to slaves held in rebellious territories. The slaves in the North and a few places in the South that did rebel were not part of the deal. What do details matter when the non-working federal workers get another day off on our dime.

Tonoght’s Sunday Night Snippet ponders the question of Southern independence if the states in rebellion had done a few things differently.

In about five or so minutes, the governor reappeared with the evening’s dessert, which was a perfect way to end the simple, but splendid meal. “All right,” the Governor continued. “As I see it, the South made two or maybe three critical errors that not only in the end resulted in their complete destruction, but ultimately drove the final nail into the coffin of the republic; first, they should have seceded over the principle of liberty and abandoned the defense of slavery altogether. Slavery just gave the North another issue to rally around and let future historians to fictionalize the true cause of the split and allow for the complete bastardization as to the true meaning of rights. It’s hard to make a case for individual rights while at the same time you allow individuals to be held in chains. Secondly, the secession didn’t need to be a total separation. You know like when you were young and dating a girl who wanted to break off the steadiness. Remember those departing words, we can still be friends. Well it was the same with the South; they could have said we no longer are going to be part of this whole federal system, but we can still be friends and hold common interest such as trade, unrestricted travel, and a force for common defense. Finally, and maybe the most important error of them all was firing even the first shot and banding together as a new entity. Imagine on the morning of April 13, 1861 there was no shot fired at Fort Sumter. Instead, one by one you have eleven states announcing that they are pulling their representatives from Washington D.C. and that they will no longer participate in the Constitutional government of the United Sates of America; no shots fired, just eleven individual states raising their middle finger to Abraham Lincoln and the remaining members of Congress. Now the eleven states did indeed secede at different times, but instead of forming a new jurisdiction, they declare their individualism. At the beginning of the Civil War, federal troops numbered about 16,000. Do you think Lincoln would have been stupid enough to spread 16,000 troops thinly into every seceded state? Furthermore, what would have been the chances of recruiting for your army so you can invade eleven states over a vast territory, when no shots had been fired and the slaves had been freed? It is hard to imagine that anyone would go off to war and certain death over the fact that an area of the country had just told the President of the United States, up yours.”

“Well, I have been in some places and I am sure you have too where the middle finger will get you a busted nose and a couple of black eyes,” Senator Seagroves mused.

“True enough, but you see my point. The President of the United States is not going to send men to their peril over a hand gesture. Hell, the North had a hard enough time drafting people without inciting a riot. Even over the issue of slavery there were some union forces that laid down their weapons and went home after Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It ended up being a cause that some were not willing to die for. I truly believe that if the South would have approached secession from these standpoints the republic would still exist today, though in a different arrangement. Jeff, you know I am always glad when we can find time to get together. Considering the hastiness and the cloaked manner in which you came down here, it is quite obvious that there is more than a fancy passing with this talk about secession. So tell me friend, what is on your mind?”

The historic budget cuts hammered out by Boehner, Obama, and Reid amounts to far less than the announced 38 billion dollars. How much less you ask. According to the CBO, the actual amount chopped from the federal budget did not even get to a single billion. It didn’t even get to a half billion. It didn’t even get to 40% of a billion. The exact number is $353,000,000.

Public School Math

What I find priceless is how the Political Transvestites spin all this budget talk. Tough guy John Boehner says the next time they will be talking about trillions instead of billions. You guys could not even cut $400,000,000, so what makes anyone think you have the balls (better peek under the skirt) to chop 2000 times the amount in this historic budget resolution.

John, I need to get back to Washington to vote for the bailouts and the wars, McCain insists Congress needs to take draconian measures on the budget. I am sure his record proves his spine when it comes to cutting government. Maybe we should start with his government paycheck and pension.

A sign outside a Hudson establishment has the Lincolnesque words “Divided We Fall”. I speculate this pertains to the cacophony over the passage of the Wisconsin Budget Repair Bill. Since the time this bill was introduced and ultimately passed, government employees including members of the local teachers’ union have engaged in walkouts, violation of private property, extortion on local businesses, and death threats.

In reaction to these thug tactics, government employees and their supporters are now publicly shunned. Individuals now literally spit in the face of their neighbor that teaches at the local government school. Families where some members produce in the private sector and the others that non-work, work in government find themselves bitterly split.

The present situation returns us to a time when neighbor fought neighbor and brother went to war against brother. The sign “Divided We Fall” implies that we all have something in common and our differences must be worked before actual blood spills in the streets. But the two sides of the debate have little in common except residing in the same town or state or nation. Our divide has always been present since the founding of our country.

A compromise between a robber and a victim still results in theft. A compromise between tyranny and liberty still results in tyranny. A compromise between poison and water still results in poison.
In the words of Patrick Henry we have tried argument and compromise to no avail.

And what have we to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last ten years. Have we anything new to offer upon the subject? Nothing. We have held the subject up in every light of which it is capable; but it has been all in vain. Shall we resort to entreaty and humble supplication? What terms shall we find which have not been already exhausted? Let us not, I beseech you, sir, deceive ourselves. Sir, we have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on.

The answer from the government non-worker, worker remains the same; give me more.

This edition of Sunday Night Snippet reveals the underlying philosophical split that has always been present. It is time to face the fact; true division may be our only salvation.

                                             Chapter II

			     Polarization

Seeking to quench his thirst from the searing Philadelphia heat and political hot air, Sylus Thayer ducked into Goat’s Tavern as he had done repeatedly throughout the summer of 1787.

Thayer, a tobacco farmer traveled from his southern Virginia homestead located near Charlotte Courthouse to witness the process of drafting a new Constitution. More than an interested spectator, he would send frequent updates by letter to his neighbor and staunch anti-federalists, Patrick Henry. Like Henry, Thayer shuttered at the thought of a strong central government.

As a member of the Virginia militia, he helped stay the British long enough in Richmond to allow Thomas Jefferson and his family escape the encircling redcoat army. He was also present when Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown. Having risked his life many times to throw the tyrants out to sea, he was not about to let the blood soaked liberties that were gained several years ago to be exchanged for promises on a piece of paper without an argument or punch in the face.

Before setting out for Philadelphia, Thayer heard the warnings of Henry at an impromptu gathering in front of the great orator’s porch. Declining to engage in the constitutional debates, Henry told the small crowd, “Government is incompatible with the genius of republicanism: There will be no checks, no real balances, in this Government: What can avail your specious imaginary balances, your rope-dancing, chain-rattling, ridiculous ideal checks and contrivances?”

In the tavern, Thayer took his seat as he had every afternoon next to Thaddeus Borlin. Tad, as he liked to be called, was a young newspaper reporter from Boston. When the Revolutionary War began he had just turned nine years-old. Most of his knowledge about the revolution and the events leading up to it was handed down from his parents and grandparents.

Since coming to America in the early 1700s, the Borlin Family garnered a good bit of wealth as spice merchants. Like many colonists at the beginning of the revolution, Tad’s family saw little benefit in war and severing ties with the mother country. This view carried over into his federalists sentiments that supported a strong central government.

After witnessing recent tax rebellions in parts of New England, Tad Borlin concluded that individualism without proper government constraint would subject the country to endless waves of anarchy. Furthermore, in a note of profiteering, a strong central government would protect trade routes that benefited the family’s fortunes.

After moistening their throats with a pint or two of ale, the two men embarked on a debate similar to the one taking place down the block between the members of Congress. To Thayer and his philosophical kin, the talks in Congress, absent the voices of Henry or Jefferson, were taking a more ominous turn each day. The rising political temperature combined with the ale were about to boil over on this afternoon.

Staring intensely at his young acquaintance next to him, Thayer let loose with a cannon barrage of discourse.

“You my young friend ignorantly believe that it is possible to set up a benevolent government, which can be tamed through the process of democracy. But soon the people will discover that the political process is the key to other’s fortunes. As the people desire more riches, so then they will they clamor for more and more government. Such political circumstances defecate on the liberty that so many died for at places like Bunker Hill, Brooklyn Heights, and Cowpens.”

“But how safe is liberty as long as the British sit at our doorsteps or barbarians under the banter of freedom parade through our streets,” a slightly more sober Tad interjected. “The tradeoffs of a powerful central government that you fear is necessary to protect what you fear losing.”

“A government large enough to protect liberty is strong enough to destroy it.” Sylus countered. ” Mark my words, if we go down this path of a powerful central government restrained by only a piece of paper, then in the future, freedoms will be destroyed by the margin of one vote out of one hundred. The bloody fight that just ended will have to be fought over and over again. Except in the future it will be a battle against fellow countrymen.”

Giving a wave of indignation, Tad questioned,” You speak so evil of government, but say nothing how your idols of liberty retain legions of men against their will. You tout the purity of liberty on one hand while at the same time clutching slaves in the other. How do you rectify such hypocrisy?”

Sylus stood up and muttered something about being a Tory child, when a great ruckus erupted outside. A verbal fight between a delegate from South Carolina and another from New Jersey that had began in the hall spilled out into the streets. Heated words transformed into stinging punches.

That night Sylus penned his final letter from Philadelphia before packing his bags the following morning for the journey home. He noted that political compromise or consensus usually welds a bad idea with a good one. The result is akin to mixing poison and water in which the outcome is poison.
