The 20th century’s most important philosopher, Ayn Rand, advocated for a revolutionary philosophical system she called Objectivism. It is no understatement to note that even today it is widely misunderstood, often misquoted, and all too frequently patently and purposefully mis-stated. In short, it is the incredibly visionary and liberating world-view that a person ought to always operate under the premise of rational self-interest. Meaning that one should use one’s best judgement in the achievement of life-serving, long range, values: those things one works to gain and keep that are necessary for the achievement of happiness.

And make no mistake about it, her philosophical system was what was missing in the brilliant work of the Founding Fathers. It is what gives fundamental power to the political system they envisioned. Had they had her then, we would not have Obama nor would we have had the incredible rise of the interventionist state we all are force to live under today. Her admonition was to always keep the long-range in view, and never commit a sacrifice – never “surrender a greater value for the sake of a lesser one”. To Rand this was the essence of morality, and as such a profound virtue.

Today is the anniversary of Ms Rand’s birthday, she would have been 107 years old today.. So, as Harry Binswanger writes:

“February 2nd is the birthday of Ayn Rand, the author of Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. Ayn Rand developed and defended Objectivism, a philosophy that advocates “rational selfishness.”

To celebrate Randsday, you do something not done on any other holiday: you give yourself a present. Randsday is for getting that longed-for luxury you ordinarily would not buy for yourself. Or for doing that long-postponed, self-pampering activity you cannot seem to fit into your chore-packed schedule.

Randsday is for reminding ourselves that pleasure is an actual need, a psychological requirement for a human consciousness. For man, motivation, energy, enthusiasm are not givens. Pathological depression is not only possible but rampant in our duty-preaching, self-denigrating culture. The alternative is not short-range, superficial “fun,” but real, self-rewarding pleasure. On Randsday, if you do something that you ordinarily would think of as “fun,” you do it on a different premise and with a deeper meaning: that you need pleasure, you are entitled to it, and that the purpose and justification of your existence is: getting what you want—what you really want, with full consciousness and dedication.”

Let’s hope it won’t take another 100 years to fully grasp and embrace her profoundly moral philosophical system!

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: – Knowing when to come in out of the rain; – Why the early bird gets the worm; … – Life isn’t always fair; – And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies, don’t spend more than you can earn and adults, not children, are in charge. His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife Discretion, his daughter Responsibility, and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame and I’m A Victim Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. A problem to which zero consideration has first been given to whether a problem even exists! As a result of your unprovable and unsupportable supernatural bias any solution I might suggest in natural terms would simply be unacceptable, and therefore the supernatural emerges as the “logical” answer.

To prove (and you must prove as the one asserting) a supernatural first cause you must first tell me/the world that the universe requires an explanation, and then that the universe actually exhibits design. You cannot assume it first and then play the bouncing ball game.. sorry but unless you deal with these fundamentals firstly any supposed proofs you might suggest are totally invalid. The existence of a supernatural being must be shown on the basis of evidence and agrugment – there is no room here for witless leaps of faith.

NOTA is surging in the polls once again. This sort of evangelical nitwittery is almost certain to guarantee the re-election of Barrack Obama.

The only candidate now who has a chance (since the GOP refuses to acknowedge the existence of Gary Johnson) is Mitt Romney – a Mormon who says he is true to his faith.

Entitlement

One of the fallouts from the entitlement mentality is the loss of awareness or courtesy. Two experiences over the last several weeks illustrate this point.

A few weeks ago I and two friends decided to take advantage of perhaps the last nice Sunday by in all likelihood playing the last of golf until next April. The pace of play was decent considering quite a few had the same idea. At the eighth hole we hit a backup that continued for the rest of the round. What caused the slow play? A foursome consisting of a husband and wife plus two children were the culprits. It was quite obvious after watching them swing at the ball that outside of the man the rest of the family belonged on a driving range instead of a golf course.

I have nothing against beginners on a golf course. My children learned by tagging along with their father and playing a hole or two. But it has always been understood that such outings are to be done late in the evening with barely another player on the course. And if you do hold somebody up, then you courteously let them play through. More and more I have noticed less slow players giving way to faster ones. I guess they feel entitled to their spot on the course no matter who else is inconvenienced.

The second incident occurred on the way to work early one rainy morning. The traffic normally at the hours I travel is very light. The brake pedal gets to sleep through the journey. On the morning in question, the brake lights of every car on the interstate lit up. Traffic crawled for no apparent reason. What caused the creeping traffic? A car speeding along at a pace that I would guess to be no m ore than 25 or 30 miles per hour. I guess the driver felt entitled to use an interstate no matter how many accidents or near crashes they caused.

A few days later on a sunny afternoon the return trip home on the freeway encountered a similar problem. This time, however, it was a driver in the far left lane jogging along well below the posted speed. Remember the time when the left lane was used for passing or when slower drives moved over to the right lane allowing faster cars to safely pass.

As each day passes, I increasingly hate people.

What does a non-worker, worker political parasite do when the voters cut off the non-worker, worker parasite tax funded paycheck. Do they try to become for once in their life a productive member of society. Of course not! The non-worker, worker political parasite sues for loss of a livelihood.

Looter Loses Livelihood

An Ohio non-worker, worker political parasite by the name of Steve Driehaus lost his race for reelection to Congress last November. Having sucked off the taxpayers his entire adult life, though I am sure one of his parents must have been a non-worker, worker, the poor non-producer apparently cannot adjust to the life of a peasant.

His resume is one that would make a common thief blush. In fact, it appears robbing people of their wealth is his only skill set. Of course Congress afforded the former looter protection that most bag men do not receive.

I cannot believe a judge would allow such a lawsuit. But judges are also non-producer, producer political parasites too.

Now They Have Ruined Baseball

I cannot even watch a baseball game without the sickening intrusion of irrational patriotism. The playoffs have been the only time this whole season that I have tuned in to a game. In place of Take Me Out to The Ballgame during the seventh inning stretch, the ballparks have persons in uniform singing God Bless America.

I find nothing in this country to praise, pledge, or sing about. We are no longer free. And even worse, the US government has gone from nosing into the business of others to being the hit man and executioner for the world.

The parade of patriotic nonsense taking over the seventh inning ritual reminds me of pictures from Nazi Germany where sporting victory was celebrated with long stanzas about the Fatherland. I would not be surprised if future seventh inning stretches include dimming the stadium lights and everyone in the crowd singing patriotic verses while holding lit candles.

If I ever attend a ballgame in the future, I will be the one sitting down during the National Anthem and the seventh inning stretch.
