The other night the North Hudson Finance Committee recommended by a vote of 3-1 to increase taxes and avoid pink slipping some police officers. I wonder if the discussion ever revolved around whether the present size of the police force more than adequately provides protection of private property and life. Of course the word protection as often noted is a loose term denoting the arrival of law enforcement after the crime has been committed.

Anyone traveling through the goon obstacle course in North Hudson would conclude that the town has more than enough police. The badge clad thugs often are seen parked in the lot of a private business awaiting the prey of a driver not making a complete stop or not having buckled their seatbelt or moving along the road at a speed higher than the limit. If the police force has enough personnel to sit idly in a parking lot, then I would say the town has too many goons.

Feeding the Goons

In a strange twist, the lone opposing vote was cast by Daryl Standafer, who also doubles as Chairman of the County Board. Standafer stated his reason for voting no came from village residents that expressed their wishes for no tax increases. As presiding officer over the County Board, Standafer’s ears apparently go deaf when it comes to county government spending and taxes. Within a week of his village “no” vote, he helped lead the charge at the County Board to pour several hundred thousand more into the money pit known as the county nursing home. Under Standafer’s command the county has failed to net a loss of one government job or one dollar of spending, which impacts the same North Hudson residents he claims listening to their cries for no more.

His logic is more than perplexing. The only thing that can be said for certain is that Daryl Standafer is the most consistent, conflicted individual in the whole of St. Croix County.

The Hudson School Board following the leash of the head bitch, Second Choice Two-Names, voted to take the taxpayers to referendum for the purchase of the dog track with a price tag of over $8,000,000. What a perfect place for a school where parents can gamble with their children’s education in the hands of government union thugs. Since the spot was a former place of gambling, let’s take a look at some numbers and odds.

Monkeys and Dogs

7- The number of monkeys on the Hudson School Board that cannot muster a simple thought on their own.

1-The tracts of land already purchased for new schools. Is the mission of the school district real estate or education? Considering the first land deal I would say they are not good at either.

10 to 20- the number of dollars the school district claims the purchase will add to tax bills of a house valued at $200,000. My tax bill is loaded with about 300 of this $10 from the school district over the years.

2- the number of grade levels at the high school beneath the district’s capacity levels. The spin from Second Choice Two-Names was that all but two grade levels at 400 or more students. You only have four grade levels at the high school, which means half are fewer than 400.

0-the improvement in average ACT scores since the district began building new schools over ten years ago and claiming they need more space for learning.

100-the times we have heard how every graduating class will exceed 400 for infinity. Last year the class was under 400

2/18- the date Hudson government teachers walked out on their students in an illegal strike

7-the number of gutless school board members that did not fire one teacher for walking out

150 – the number of teachers that held a whole school district hostage.

17% or more- the guess on what percentage of students would leave the government schools if vouchers were offered to every family. Now you do not have a space problem.

23-the miles from Hudson to New Richmond. Take a drive through New Richmond and you will see how a school district bent on more space destroyed a whole town

1-the stooges writing in the local papers that cover school district news

????- what is the cost of the school yet to be built. Why vote to purchase land when you do not know what the cost of the building will be. The cost will be a lot more than 8 million dollars. What good is land if the voters won’t pay for the building? See the first land sitting vacant

100 to 1- odds of passing a referendum in this economy.

Presidential hopeful Herman Cain claims that his 999 tax plan where businesses and individuals are federally taxed at a flat rate of 9% in addition to a 9% national sales tax will be revenue neutral. I am always perplexed by so-called trumpeters of limited government that want to change tax policy while at the same time ensuring the government will haul in the same or more tax receipts. Since taxes are the food for big government, how can you continue to feed the beast and expect to limit its size? This is like putting a 400 pound person on a diet by letting them eat the very things that made them fat.

In 2000 federal tax receipts amounted to nearly $1.8 trillion. The amount in 2010 exceeded $2.1 trillion, which is nearly a 17% increase over the decade. According to Mr. Cain the right size for government is bigger than it was 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or 100 years ago. Apparently Cain and his supporters are satisfied with the level of federal intrusion in this country and around the world. What happens when the economy grows? The government brings in more tax money and increases its bureaucracy, which means even more intrusion.

This is the problem with many flat tax proposals floating around. They all premise the virtue of the various plans in that government receives more money. I would personally endorse a national sales tax plan with the preface that all other taxation is eliminated and a receipt cap is placed on the federal government plus restrict the ability of Washington D.C. to borrow money. For example, a national sales tax of 15% is placed on all goods, which allows an individual to keep all of their income up front and then decide how they want to be taxed. Once the federal coffers reach $500 billion the sales tax is suspended until the beginning of the next fiscal year.

You cannot have limited government if you do not limit the flow of funds into the Treasury or limit the amount on the credit card. Herman Cain’s math is a little conflicted along with his idea of smaller government.

In his testimony before a Congressional Sub-Committee that I posted last night, Peter Schiff claims his real marginal tax rate is closer to 90% if you add up all the taxes paid. In our daily routines we barely make note of the tax applied to merchandise transactions, gasoline purchases, phone charges, and literally hundreds of other items. Listed below are taxes that many pay without a thought:

•Accounts Receivable Tax
•Building Permit Tax
•Capital Gains Tax
•CDL license Tax
•Cigarette Tax
•Corporate Income Tax
•Court Fines (indirect taxes)
•Deficit spending
•Dog License Tax
•Federal Income Tax
•Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA)
•Fishing License Tax
•Food License Tax
•Fuel permit tax
•Gasoline Tax
•Hunting License Tax
•Inflation
•Inheritance Tax Interest expense (tax on the money)
•Inventory tax IRS Interest Charges (tax on top of tax)
•IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax)
•Liquor Tax
•Local Income Tax
•Luxury Taxes
•Marriage License Tax
•Medicare Tax
•Property Tax
•Real Estate Tax
•Septic Permit Tax
•Service Charge Taxes
•Social Security Tax
•Road Usage Taxes (Truckers)
•Sales Taxes
•Recreational Vehicle Tax
•Road Toll Booth Taxes
•School Tax
•State Income Tax
•State Unemployment Tax (SUTA)
•Telephone federal excise tax
•Telephone federal universal service fee tax
•Telephone federal, state and local surcharge taxes
•Telephone minimum usage surcharge tax
•Telephone recurring and non-recurring charges tax
•Telephone state and local tax
•Telephone usage charge tax
•Toll Bridge Taxes
•Toll Tunnel Taxes
•Traffic Fines (indirect taxation)
•Trailer Registration Tax
•Utility Taxes
•Vehicle License Registration Tax
•Vehicle Sales Tax
•Watercraft Registration Tax
•Well Permit Tax
•Workers Compensation Tax

The list does not include many special local taxes and import fees added to the cost of foreign goods. Of course here in St. Croix County we need to include the “Wheel Tax”. Adding all these taxes together results in a marginal tax rate of 48% for the average American. In some form or another almost half of our earnings are stolen by the government and for the wealthy the crime is even greater.

Does anyone really believe the problem is not enough taxes?

As a few of us have pointed out, the federal budget talks that include the Ryan Plan take what amounts to a giant leap of faith. The national government currently spends annually around $1.4 trillion more than what it takes in taxes and fees. Projections over the next ten years show the present national debt of $14.475 trillion growing to over $20 trillion by the end of the decade.

Even the most aggressive spending reduction plans seem to fall woefully short of balancing the budget let alone reducing the size of the debt. A $2 trillion cut over the next 10 years still results in $5.5 trillion of projected government spending for the year 2021. The government currently takes in less than $2.5 trillon. In order to have a balanced budget that would mean federal tax receipts would have to more than double.

Cato Institute Video on the Budget Illusion

How could that possibly happen?

One thing I can’t quite figure is how you can support a position of smaller government, but you don’t want to cut the number of non-worker, worker government employees. The Walker budget is based on the notion of cutting the budget without giving a number of non-worker, workers the heave-ho. If you cut government without axing employees then it would mean the non-worker, workers would do even less non-working, work.

The St. Croix County Board under the leadership of self-proclaimed conservative Daryl Standefur continues to hire government non-worker, workers despite a soft hiring freeze, which means it does not exist. The latest non-hiring freeze of non-worker, workers happened this week when the Board approved the hiring of a County Administrator. I didn’t even know we were missing one!

It appears we have not had a non-worker, worker County Administrator or manager for the last six or seven months. It is hard to tell you are missing something when you don’t miss it in the first place. It’s like missing the warm touch of a hot girl that you no chance of getting within 5 yards of anyway.

Now I wonder what this new administrator is going to do for me that I didn’t miss in the first place and why the taxpayers need to pay for his salary. Word has it that he is responsible for creating budgets and seeing that the other government non-worker, worker department heads stay within financial limits. That sounds like a pimp trying to make sure the whores look respectable.

The only people going to benefit from the hire of the non-missed, non-worker, worker County Administrator is Daryl Standefur and the nursing home residents that sit on the County Board. Is it not the responsibility of an elected Board to devise a budget and to make sure the non-worker, workers stay within its limits?

Of course the current Board is made up mostly of current or retired non-worker, workers and geriatrics that look like they have been wheeled in for their weekly Bingo program. Some are lucky to hit their drool cups let alone form any rational thought. Check the local access station the next time a St. Croix County Board meeting is broadcasted and notice the blank stares. I should warn you not to watch the entire meeting because they usually last at least 3 hours. It takes at least an hour for everyone to adjust their hearing aides to the proper setting. From the vote taken last week, we only have 5 or 6 sane people on the Board that does not include the County Chair.

The bottom line is that Daryl Standefur surrendered his responsibility to the taxpayers and handed them over to a government employee that the taxpayers did not need. In addition he added another non-worker, worker and his spouse to the voting roles in the state. In other words we now have at least two more votes being cast for larger government every election.

Like other conservative transvestites, Standefur talks like a man while at the same time he is checking himself in the mirror to see how the dress fits.

For a number of years I have wondered how HSO assistant editor Randy Hanson could have such a liberal slant to his opinion. It is just difficult for me to imagine how someone working in the private sector could harbor such a skewed opinion on basic economics. Randy’s last opinion piece about collective bargaining was the ultimate in leftist reasoning, if you can call it reasoning at all.

In addition to his highly slanted opinion pieces, Randy has been giving significant front page press to teacher union leader Shelly Moore. It is amazing how much press Ms. Moore has received and how little she has actually said. Surely Mr. Hanson could ask a few hard questions of the challenger in this recall election. Her connection with the government union is quite obvious and she would certainly be serving a very narrow constituency if elected.

Then recently I learned that prior to joining the staff at the HSO, Randy Hanson was a Wisconsin government school teacher. Randy retired as a teacher and currently draws a public pension that he made no contributions to. The taxpayers paid for his retirement and now he spends his time rambling on about how we should spend even more money on big government. Randy tries to belittle anyone who feels that the current spending by our government at all levels is unsustainable.

Doesn’t Mr. Hanson or editor Doug Stohlberg feel the need to inform the readers that Mr. Hanson is a retired teacher? Isn’t Mr. Hanson proud of his teaching past? Obviously he feels to the need to criticize anyone who dares to challenge the status quo in government education, so why hasn’t he told us about his previous employment?

Perhaps Randy wants us to believe he is just this kind hearted individual who sees the good in such a system and that anyone who challenges the wages, pensions or healthcare that state employees receive must have an evil streak in them. Or a more likely scenario is that he doesn’t want his readers to know that he is one of those privileged individuals with the guaranteed pension for life.

Nice try Randy, but let’s be honest from here on out shall we?

As pointed out many times before, government non-worker-workers add zero to the economic calculation. Their ability to participate in economic activity depends on how much they take from the wealth of the productive. The spending these non-worker, workers boast about helping the economy already existed in another’s pocket.

Faced with this fact, the government employee apologists resort to just as preposterous fable; government workers pay taxes too. I guess in a technical sense taxes do come out their paychecks. But the money they receive in tax-paid wages and benefits dwarfs anything paid into the system.

Here is a riddle: if someone steals a thief’s loot, does the thief have a claim of being robbed? The answer is no. The property never rightfully belonged to the thief in the first place. Therefore, a thief can never be robbed. What has really taken place is the original victim being stolen from a second time.

The same goes for the “tax-paying” government non-worker, worker paying taxes. Since the money they receive as income is forcibly taken from another in the form of taxes, then the taxes a government employee pays is in reality taxing the original property twice.

Furthermore, eliminating government jobs would reduce the need for the original taxes paid by the wealth producer. In other words, if the government did not exist, then the need to pay taxes would disappear.

Again, government non-worker, workers add nothing to the equation no matter how it is formulated.

Earlier today I came across a comment so incredibly stupid to a Hudson Star-Observer article that it needed to be run up the flag pole for everyone to see. The HSO wrote a story about how Assistant District Attorneys are saying no to six unpaid furlough days. Commenting, a person named Caroline said the following:



caroline said: On May 7, 2011 at 5:26 PM
Yep, John, just keep cutting the pay of those public employeees and laying them off, and then watch them stop buying all those products from private sector businesses because they can’t afford to consume, and we’ll see how that affects the economy.

Her logic appears very similar that to local education thug leader Scott Ellingson who used the same reasoning in his argument for increasing teacher pay. Caroline, where do you think the money comes from that ends up in the paychecks of government non-worker, workers. If you say anything other than taxing the producers, then you are truly dense. Since the money already existed before it was ripped from mine and every other producer’s wallet, then the economic activity that you claim would disappear with government non-worker, worker layoffs still remains. The only difference is that I get to spend the entirety of my labor and profits instead of being forced to give it to another.

Would economic activity suffer if we eliminated welfare? Of course not. The welfare queen and the government non-worker, worker both derive their money from the pockets of producers. At least the welfare queen is honest enough to admit they do not produce anything.

I guess according to Caroline’s logic a bank robber is essential to economic activity because otherwise the money in the vault would not be spent.

Paul Krugman threw the above graph up out at the NYT as a demonstration that “rich people” don’t pay taxes in a way that creates progressivity.. And his point was all about total taxes, not just federal.. Krugman states:

The overall system is barely progressive at all.

And here’s the thing: the people peddling this stuff about those lucky duckies who don’t pay tax because their incomes are low know all this, because it has been pointed out many times. They are deliberately trying to deceive you.

No, the system in total is obscenely progressive! And progressivity is the obscenity to begin with.. Let’s get this cleared up here and now, “progressivity” in taxation is immoral. Anyone who promotes it is a lying cheating stealing thug.. And the person doing the real deceiving here is Krugman himself.. Please note in the bar chart that he breaks the last 20% group into 4 groups! If you want a truthful graph, keep them all in consistent groupings of 20%. When you do that you see that the top 20% pay roughly 60% of ALL TAXES INCLUDING STATE, LOCAL, AND FEDERAL.

That’s right, it’s additive for those four groups… Below is a proper recast of Krugman’s deceptive graph… So much for Paul Krugman. What a bum.

If S&P has taken this long to issue a negative watch on The US Treasury’s ability to repay debt, what would it actually take for this rating agency to make good on its warning? This is the question no one wants to really discuss in the media. It’s as if people here in the U.S. actually think that folks all around the world don’t already see our situation for what it really is… and think they can keep it that way. Moreover, If the United States has gotten away with a AAA rating all the while incurring massive deficits, doing basically nothing to address the incredible imbalances in the government, one has to really wonder… Well, now that the S&P has finally come out of the closet on this let’s briefly explore further.

It’s pretty clear now what will happen, and we will see a package of three measures; two of which are totally and completely antithetical to everything the Tea Party supposedly ran upon (not to mention what the Republican Party ought to stand for). We already know that Paul Ryan stipulated an increase in the debt ceiling – he has no fundamental aversion to big government, notwithstanding his occasional rhetoric and appearances as a deficit hawk. If he did, he would not have already agreed to engage in the illegal/legal ceiling charade (not to mention his support for the bailouts). So, you have Ryan’s “extreme” plan on the one hand, and the Obama plan (hitting the snake oil train today) on the other with both plans not-so-tacitly assuming an increase in the debt ceiling. Everything else proceeds from here..

The package will be fundamentally a political one composed of cuts in the rate of growth in spending coupled with small and generally symbolic cuts in some government programs, a tax increase upon both the middle class and, especially, millionaires and billionaires (defined as anyone who earns over $250,000 (:>) ), and an increase in the debt ceiling (which will be illegal before it becomes legal). We will still have the obscene and immoral situation whereby roughly 1/2 of the tax filers (a slight, but not dramatic, broadening could occur) in this country pay no federal income tax, while the percentage of total tax revenue coming from the aforementioned millionaires and billionaires will rise.

With this basic blue print of increased taxes, modest spending cuts, and an incresed debt ceiling, the Washington viewed expenditure equation will be “balanced.” How much will the ceiling ceiling be raised? That’s a great question, but last year they engaged in the illegal, then legal, debt ceiling increase charade by tacking on roughly an additional 2 trillion… Given our dire situation, the number I see is an increase in the range $2.5 to $5 trillion. Yes, I realize that is an extremely wide range. But given the differences in Ryan’s plan verses what Obama is trying to sell, the ceiling charade really is the variable here. And this is where Obama will be focusing, in fact he has already shown his hand on this by extending his time frame to 12 years, etc.. Once the ceiling charade is again revisited and adjusted up, the Treasury will then commence to sell this debt. And this is where we get back to the S&P, and will see whether it has even a modicum of follow-through.

For every dollar of additional debt authorized, a commensurate incremental decrease in our credit worthiness is justified – all other things being equal. Such an incremental decrease justifies an increase in the rate of interest others can demand due to an increased risk premium addition. To compensate, we must either increase revenue or decrease our expenditures. The increased revenue and/or decreased expenditures must account for both present commitments and provisioning for future obligations, adjusted for increases or decreases in the cost of our debt. As a general premise, if our expenditures are lowered, and our debt ceiling is kept at its present level, the credit worthiness component (risk premium) of the interest rate we pay will not rise (we maintain our AAA rating). Conversely, if the debt ceiling is raised, then our interest payments will also go up (we have a degraded rating).

It is my observation that interest on our debt (new and already issued) is going to be rising as folks around the world already see our sovereign debt as something other than AAA, so the stipulation to increase the debt ceiling coupled with spending cuts and increased taxes will, at best, be merely an attempt to keep the appearance that our boat will stay afloat (even though listing, with a gaping hole in its side). The increased debt, higher taxes, and modest spending cuts are merely a not-so-elegant rearrangement of the deck chairs in an attempt to refocus attention (ours and other would-be purchasers of our debt) away from the sinking end of the boat, and into the blue sky above.. This adjusting of the balance sheet premised upon MORE total debt to fund current and near term spending will require a higher interest rate to compensate would-be buyers of that new debt. And make no mistake about it, an increase in the debt repayments will result here because rational investors (foreign and domestic private investors) will demand it – and rightfully so. The S&P has essentially given them the green light to demand it merely by virtue of this warning announcement…

And therein is the issue. If S&P has stated that that the U.S.’s sovereign debt credit rating is in a watch status, and such a watch actually has the potential for a consequence (a 1 in 3 chance of a downgrade), then they should, in view of what both sides in this debate have ALREADY stipulated, lower the U.S. rating immediately upon the agreements reached in this debate – regardless the formula. And the reason is that this whole budget matter is nothing more than a classic Catch-22; a logical paradox that occurs when a person, or a government in this case, wants something (the credit rating that implies confidence for debt buyers to buy at the lowest risk rate available) that can only be acquired by not being in that very situation (increasing total debt); therefore, the acquisition of this thing becomes logically impossible.

Folks, there is only one way out of this paradox. The aforementioned 2 out of 3 must be eliminated from the debate and the solution. The debt ceiling must not be raised under any circumstances, and taxes should actually be lowered across the board and applied to all tax filers. The only rational solution here is to simply cut spending, reform entitlements (meaning phase out Medicare and social security), and dramatically cut the defense budget. Sadly, this is not part of either the Ryan plan nor, of course, Obama’s. Any legislator who supports either plan is betraying the premise upon which they were elected. Tea Party elected members for sure, and any so-called fiscal conservatives. Anyone who suggests, such as Paul Ryan, that the game begins with a continuation of the ceiling charade is not to be taken fully seriously in this matter. The solutions that are now on the table are non-solutions, and the S&P, if it is to have any credibility at all in the future, must lower the U.S. credit rating immediately after the votes on this budget issue are cast – regardless the outcome.

S&P downgrade of United States AAA rating probability >=33% !

On Sunday, Timothy “I can’t figure my own taxes” Geitner stated in no uncertain terms that we (meaning the Federal Government of the United States) actually can have our cake and eat it too.. All we need to do, says Geitner, is tax the rich and raise the debt ceiling..

About 20 minutes later, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan indicated that it is and has been for the longest time irrational to him that we even HAVE a debt ceiling law..

Today, (first time in history, I believe but I could be wrong) Standard & Poors Ratings Services Inc. cut its outlook on the U.S. to negative, increasing the likelihood of a potential downgrade from its triple-A rating, as the path from large budget deficits and rising government debt remains unclear.

S&P analyst Nikola G. Swann stated that:”More than two years after the beginning of the recent crisis, U.S. policy makers have still not agreed on how to reverse recent fiscal deterioration or address longer-term fiscal pressures.” Swan went on to note that the rating agency puts the chance of a U.S. downgrade within two years at least one-in-three.

Now, Greenspan’s comments on the heels of Geitner’s was interesting insofar as he was pointing out the rediculous nature of what Geitner was suggesting.. Essentially, why have a law that states you have a debt ceiling when you simply vote to raise it everytime you need to spend beyond your means. What was implicit in Geitner’s pipedream, and sage reflection by Greenspan (who I do not always agree with) was the fundamental premise that America can borrow, tax, and spend at will with no consequence… That, in fact, economics stops at the gate to the Federal Reserve… Also, and this bears some reflection, none of this occurs in an international vacuum.. please note that roughly 24 hours ago China further tightened its monetary policy.

Folks, this is akin to an auto driver leading a caravan of protestors heading for Madison who has decided to drive 85 instead of 65 in very inclement weather with ice and snow on the road. He gets pulled over, along with 5 other motorists, by the State Patrol. The officer starts to issue citations and the first motorist says, “wait, stop, we’re all going to protest, and we have a right to protest, so we’re going to have a vote by the road here to see if the speed limit should be increased to 86 (retroactively) … and, by the way, majority rules, i.e. a democratic vote…”

The vote was 6 for and 1 against, no tickets were issued. 30 miles down the road all 5 followers were involved in a multi-car accident that killed 12, jammed the interstate for hours, and caused (all things considered) a couple $million in costs … including the lives o two women and their unborn fetuses. The lives and future generations will never be the same…

And the lead driver? He never saw the accident behind him because the snow cloud he was creating in his wake was simply too thick…

The answer to both questions is obvious except to journalists and a law professor that shill for collectivism.

People actually want to keep what is rightfully theirs. Now that is a novel thought.
