I just have one question- Has anybody in the Crimmins household gotten just ONE CHECK from the private sector?
I think there is a cousin, twice removed, who held a part-time summer job as a taste tester for the Hostess food company (you know, the outfit that makes Twinkies, Ho-Ho’s, and Little Cindy’s (oops, I meant Debbies)).
Towncrier, you forgot that Annette Cook also serves on the YMCA board of directors. In case you forgot, the YMCA funnels millions of dollars throught he school district. No conflict there!
The St Paul YMCA is the non-profit organization that pays it’s president about one-quarter million dollars when you include benefits and expenses.
What about DW’s wife — she works for the School District plus works at the polls during elections. Hmmmm. Great job if you can get it.
I guess I really don’t consider people who volunteer on boards such as the Police and Fire Commission government employees, I consider them public servants. Now, it that position is used wrong its a different story, but I don’t consider elected or appointed people employees. Whether I agree with them or not, I do give anybody who runs for public office some respect for simply running. While we’ve had some good candidates in elections over the years, I cringe at the high number of unopposed elections.
Blacklab I think you missed the point. If the people on these boards are either working for the government or have relations that are working for the government, where do you think their bias lies in a debate between the taxpayers and the governmental body. For example all seven members of the school board have government connections. You have seven people whose livelihoods depend on bigger government and the ability to legally steal. They see nothing wrong with looting your pocket for whatever reason as long as it allows government to get bigger. Hell none of them that were present on June 14th even considered the Constitutional rights of citizens. They were only concerned that government could carry on without being questioned. I believe the most important question to ask a candidate is who in their family is a government employee? If they have any, you are not getting my vote!!
towncrier, you have landed once again back at a point I keep making time and again. That being what happens when 51% of the voting population are directly beholdin to government and the redistribution of other people’s wealth – the answer is that we are all screwed, more eleoquently that the vision of the Founding Fathers is completely and totally destroyed.

So, if I am going to truly be a “public servant” I have two choices: As either an elected, appointed or hired member at some level or unit of government, or as a private citizen pursuing my self-interest (and in doing so improving the lot of many people as so eloquently stated here on numerous occasions, and reducing the perceived need for additional government services).
.
As a facilitator of government in one way or another, the only moral role one can can play is in support of the idea that the proper function of government (federal, state or local) is a strictly limited one that does for people only those things that meet two fundamental criteria: first, things that objectively must be done and secondly, things that cannot be done by individuals themselves.
.
When viewed in this way the list gets pretty small and one need not run around blindly believing that an additional rung on Maslow’s ladder can be attained by offering “service to the greater good of society,” particularly if such “service” is defined as the second of the above two choices…
.
I believe that there are clearly essential services (protection of life, liberty and property) that must be provided by government units, but that the definition of “essential” needs serious review. Moreover, the real public servants out there are the businessmen and women who are creating wealth each and every day. It is to these people we need to tip our caps, it is these people who are the truly benevolent actors…
