Tom Paine was not elected to any office in his own time; why do you think it noteworthy to surmise he could not get elected today?
Paine was a gifted and inspirational writer but hardly and intellectual. He careened from enthusiasm to enthusiasm — and from country to county — trying to make a buck. During his initial stint in America, from 1774 to 1787, he was under the direct influence of Franklin, and to his credit authored some stirring works, predominent among them “Common Sense” and American Crisis.” But after the War he was interested neither in political ecomomy nor in creating a new government, but rather in a number of entreprenurial venures including smokeless candles and iron bridges. By 1787 he left America for France, not to return for some 20 years. So the idea that he had anywhere near the stature or influence of the principle Founders is pretty hard to accept.
By the time Paine finally returned to America, the country was entering its third decade under a constitution that he had nothing to do with. He was a broken man, and had alienated himself from all but the elites of France and England due to his anti-religious works. He had never established a political society or organization and was not responsible for a single reforming measure on either side of the Atlantic.
But what I think you find most intriging and inspiring about Paine is not his contributions to political philosophy, which are thin, but rather his contempt for religion in general and Christianity in particular. I think you find all that rather uplifting and Randian.
What you fail to realize, I think, is that Americans just don’t see things your way when it comes to religion. Americans may like liberty, and freedom, and capitalism too, but they also are fiercely religious. One thing about America that has not changed in some 250 years; the public does not trust anyone who wears his anti-christianity on his sleeve. That is why Tom Paine was not elected in his own time, and would not be elected today.

If my post was intended to be bait set to trap a card carrying Evangelical Christian into illustrating my point, and very much reinforcing my thesis, I guess my task would be finished.

Lastly, this silly idea, apparently an involuntarily reaction by overly defensive Christians, that Americans are “fiercely religious” is ridiculous. It’s almost as outrageous as the statement that, “America was founded as a Christian nation.” Both are patently false misrepresentations that are designed to engender a false sense of like-mindedness. It’s a sham and when vomited at children borders on child abuse.
If Americans were “fiercely religious” you would see an absolute increase in mainline denominations among the American population, particularly if adjusted to exclude new immigrants and illegal aliens. But the facts (those troubling little details that get in the way of virgin births and dead men walking about the planet for a couple days, seas being parted at men’s commands, and wine spurting from rocks or magically transformed from water) are that the percentage of people who claim they are Christians in America has declined by over 10% in less than 20 years. If that were adjusted to exclude immigrants, I suspect the number would be a fair bit higher – bordering on 15%. More striking is the fact that mainline denominations are in an utter meltdown.
What you see in America, by and large, is not a “fiercely religious” population but rather a slow process of enlightenment, which although painfully slow and tedious, is nontheless occurring. Americans are rejecting traditional religion and flocking to non-denominational, rock and roll music, mass participation mystic jam sessions.
The facts are that Americans are clearly rejecting religious fundamentalism (for profoundly good reasons), which means they are NOT fiercely religious.
