More Quality Education

By

Last week sure was busy in regards to quality education. In case you missed it, this is what $11,000 per student bought the taxpayers.

Students exercising their right to be stupid held a protest over the air quality of the High school. The result of this junk science mentality was numerous suspensions and fines. This story was reported on KSTP television.

If this wasn’t good enough, there was the inaugural bomb-threat of the year.

You can say whatever you want about a cost of $11,000 per student, but tell me where else you can get this type of entertainment, certainly not at a $3500 per student private school or a home school.

Now the question is: With all this excitement where was HSO crack reporter Meg, â??I see no evil, hear no evil, and will report no evilâ? Heaton. Nope, not a word about this from the HSO and Rivertowns.net website. Meg is beyond reproach when it comes to reporting about â??quality educationâ?.

Vote Yes for more taxes and quality entertainment.

I am curious too about where the HSO article is. I saw Meg herself out with the crowds and someone taking pictures. I have been checking their website and no mention of it???
I will have to say that the high school does need some repair and some clean-up (not another one built though!!!) but it did pass inspection and even if they scoured the place, I doubt the one student behind this protest would be able to attend anyway. She has been getting her education outside the school itself and still is being hospitalized. I feel bad for her but to be honest, I doubt the school could ever be made clean enough for her condition.
The first day, some kids did an in-school protest by wearing surgical masks and putting up posters. Though I feel they are a bit misinformed and misguided, I thought they were exercising their rights in a responsible manner. The protest the next day by skipping classes took it too far and just appears to be an excuse to cut class. I want kids to learn to stand up for what they beleive, but they need to learn to be informed first AND be responsible or they cannot expect to be taken seriously.

Excercising their rights in a responsible manner? Give me a freekin break here, since when do kids have a right to be a truant! If these kids would have been out on the front lawn protesting against the upcoming referendum there would have been fines and jail time called for by the socialists in Hudson. Yet, just because these little miscreant meat heads were protesting for some politically correct b as in b, s as in s, everybody seems to give them a pass and say they were exercising their rights – bull! They have no right to be truants, they are expected to be in school… For crying out loud, we’re dishing out $11,000 per meat head to watch this non enforcement?

What is called for here is either basic enforcement of the law, or get rid of the law. Personally, the whole notion of compulsory attendence is socialist bull but it’s currently the law in Wisconsin…

    1. A student is considered truant if he/she is absent without an acceptable excuse for all or part of one or more days during which school is held. A student qualifies to be habitually truant when he/she is absent without an acceptable excuse all or part of five or more days in a school semester. §118.16(1)(a) and (c), Stats.

    2. The school attendance officer must notify the parent(s) and direct the parent to return the child to school or provide an excuse. Notification must occur by the end of the second day after receiving a report of the unexcused absence. §118.16(2)(c), Stats.

    3. For the first offense, parents and guardians of students who are truant could be fined up to $500 or imprisoned 30 days. §118.15(5)(a)1. a., Stats. For the second and subsequent offense, the fine cannot exceed $1,000 and/or imprisonment for 90 days. They could also be required to perform community service, §118.15(5)(a)2., Stats, participate in counseling at their own expense and/or attend school with the truant child. §118.15(5)(am) & 118.163(2) (k) & §938.342(1m)(a), Stats. In addition, parents and guardians can be held all or partially responsible for any fines that their child receives. §118.163(1m)(b) and §938.342(1d)(b), Stats. They can also be responsible for the cost of any counseling or for supervised work. §118.163(2)(b) and 938.342(1g)(b), Stats. Also, any adult who knowingly contributes to truancy can be found guilty of a Class C misdemeanor under §948.45, Stats. Some exceptions exist for parents or guardians of children under Learnfare. §49.26(1)(h), Stats.

If these kids want to protest after school down at the park, that would be exercising their rights – doing what they did was not.

Me thinks you misread what I wrote. What I said was it is great to see kids standing up for what they beleive, but I was saying they did it WITHOUT being informed and NOT in a responsible manner.

  4. visciousventor says:

duly noted – no offense intended. my rant was aimed at the kstp piece which more than once referred to their rights…

  5. ebaybabee says:

no problem. I missed the TV piece. Sounds like the TV people weren’t too informed or responsible either…hummm, maybe these kids will be future KSTP news anchors?

  6. Max Fill says:

Item #3 in comment #2 above is chilling. The parents are responsible if the chitlin doesn’t show, yet the schools do all they can to disenfranchise the parents from taking a real role in the child’s education…

My what a tangled web the state weaves.

  7. columbo says:

Here is another question to ponder: Were the kids acting on their own accord or were they being directed by an adult or adults with an agenda? In October L led students in a protest before a school board meeting calling for a new high school and RS led a parade of kids supporting gay marriage. It is possible these kids were being used.

  8. ebaybabee says:

I don’t know for sure if an adult led the protest but I do know that most teachers and adults I know at the school were NOT happy about the protest. It was seen as an excuse to cut class by most I talked to. I do know of at least some of the students being punished for the protest/missing classes.
