The answer to price fluctuations is not to cut down our forests, engage in massive additional irrigation, and pay farmers subsidized prices for corn. That is clearly an irrational slippery slope. What we need is to tap into proven and readily available sources, such as Anwar, and to allow companies to extract natural gas and oil from both the Atlantic Basin and in the Gulf of Mexico. Then, we need to increase our nuclear power production capabilities right here at home. It is beyond belief that a state senator can call for corn ethanol mandates, yet remain silent on increasing nuclear power production. The latter would benefit all citizens, the former only benefits farmers at the cost of reduced forestation and water table levels. Furthermore, we need a stable government in Iraq (which appears to be on the horizon), Riyadh and elsewhere. When governments are acting in their proper role, capitalism can work and our energy concerns will dim dramatically.

By the way, we could be seeing $40 oil down the road… Story here. Then there was a story at Drudge yesterday (sorry, can’t find the link)with even more interesting news and it portends much lower prices. And the reason the Saudi oil people feel this way has to do with our ability to find, extract and diversify….
