Parents and Children “Squeeze” Into High School

By

Last night the parents of incoming freshman at Hudson High “squeezed” into the auditorium to learn about what a great job the school district does with our children and that they will be in a “safe” environment even though the hallways of our high school will be overcrowded once again this year. How many of you reading this blog had crowded hallways when you were growing up? What do you expect when you let all of the kids out of their classes at the same time and you schedule it so they have to walk from one side of the school to the other between classes?

Let’s use the district administration and school board logic for 2nd Street in Hudson. I was stuck in a serious traffic jam a week and a half ago because of the Pepperfest parade. It took me 20 minutes to go from Vine/2nd to North Hudson. I was thinking that maybe we should widen 2nd Street into a 4 or 6 lane road! Get the point?

The more relevant question for our administrators is- What’s the average class size at the high school? Do you notice that they never, ever talk about that? The reason why is because the average class size is still around 22-23 students. Does anyone here on the blog think that’s overcrowded?

And one more thing. I understand we had $778,000 that could have been used to widen the hallways in the high school this year, but the school board decided to spend it on health insurance for teachers and administrators who retire at 55 instead. Do you really think they worry about the kiddies first?

What I have a hard time understanding is where did these people go to school? Did they not have the same class size as we do now? Did they not have crowded hallways between classes? And we did just fine if not better. Where is the logic?

Another point that I haven’t seen mentioned on this blog. Where are the teachers getting their school supply lists? Why do the students need cloth book covers? Why isn’t a grocery bag sufficient? If it rips, replace it. Hello!! Last year many of us ran around looking for an erasable highlighter. I even talked to a sales rep from Sharpie that happened to be at Office Max and she hadn’t even heard of such a thing. Unbelievable.

Well, when I went to school most of my classes had 35-40+ kids in them in high school. I think the nunbers we have now would have been super back then! As for the supply lists….anyone else had the problem that the school gives you a list, your kids end up not using about 1/4 of it and you get an additional list of supplies the first week of school. THAT ticks me off! I have 3 kids (3rd grade-8th) and have spent $200 on school supplies alone so far. I will really be upset if they don’t use all of it AGAIN this year and if I then have to buy even more. (I also like how when they give you the new additional list, you have to have it all the NEXT DAY!)
