Senator Kohl does New Richmond

By

Senator Herb Kohl came to New Richmond today to give a talk to the Rotary Club at Suzanna’s Restaurant. This was a surprise to me as he usually delegates local visits to his aide in Eau Claire.

I was sitting with a friend having coffee and noticed a gentleman talking to three ladies at a nearby table. He looked like Herb Kohl, but, I thought, he never comes to New Richmond. Then he came to our booth and introduced himself. He sat down and we had a nice 20 minute conversation.

COMMENT: I think it’s time the Democrats stop filibustering Supreme Court nominees.

KOHL: You know we approved over 200 of Bush nominees and held up only 10. We have a good track record.

COMMENT: With all due respect Senator we need strict constructionists, you know, judges who will uphold the constitution.

KOHL: See Kohl above.

COMMENT: We need to get rid of the 60, 40, rule on Senate subcommittee votes and have an up or down vote on judges like it says in the constitution.

KOHL: See Kohl comment above again.

That wasn’t getting anywhere so on to the next topic.

COMMENT: You are Jewish and with the treatment of the Jews in the holocaust, how can you align yourself with the Democrats on their abortion stand?

KOHL: I am for a women’s right to choose. Abortion should be rare.

COMMENT: The right to choose is a euphemism for abortion. Women don’t have the right to choose suicide, using drugs, or prostitution so where does that put the women’s right to choose.

KOHL: What would you do in the case of incest, or rape?

COMMENT: Okay, let’s say we limit abortion to only those women who are raped or conceive during incest, how many abortions would there be?

KOHL: Not very many. I’m against partial birth abortion.

We shook hands and he went to the Rotary Club meeting. He’s a nice guy and I’ll visit him the next time I go to Washingtn DC

If Kohl’s numbers are correct (200+ Bush-nominees approved v. 10 held up), that would tell me that 95% of Bush nominees are being approved. That seems to be a rather substantial number. Maybe our US Senators need to look deeper into the nominees they are approving. A 95% approval rating is almost a rubber stamp process…

Would we really want to get rid of the 60, 40 rule on Senate subcommittee votes? What will happen when the American voting public wakes up and sends the Republicans packing to their CEO jobs at places like Halliburton? You need to have a little more forward vision on this one BobZ.

Also, what is the connection between the Holocaust and the Democrats abortion stand? The killing of Jews and others by the Germans in WWII was state-sponsored genocide. It had nothing to do with an individaul’s freedom of choice. I suspect the number of Democrats who support aborition as a means of birth control for casual sex is very low. Conversely, I believe the number of Democrates who believe in an individual’s freedom to choose is very high. The individaul is responsible for the choices made. Prostitution is legal in Nevada. That’s a commercial decision. If I’m reading the St. Paul paper correctly, position is rampant in certain neighborhoods in the Twin Cities, e.g., Frogtown.

Any good libertrarian and follower of the writings of Ludwig Von Mises knows he favord the legalization of drugs and, most certainly, he would have been in favor of a woman’s right to have and aborition and to be a prostitutenot to mention homosexuality
