She Can’t Help Herself

By

In this week – New Richmond News, Yeah Group NR member Laura Elkin has another letter to the editor imploring readers to “get educated” about the upcoming School Board elections. The tone of the letter drips with condescension and arrogance. It is also full of hollow rhetoric and spelling errors. Get educated indeed!

She raises the following questions (spelling errors included):

Before csating your vote, be able to answer with certainty: Has the candidate been active in our schools and community? Is the candidtate running for his/her own personal agenda or for all of our communty? Who do you trust to tackle the issues and to do what is best for our students?

Let – take a few moments to look at these questions. All six candidates for School Board are active in the schools and community. So that question was meaningless.

Next question raises whether or not candidates have a personal agenda. Hmm. Like new a multitude of new basketball courts that all members of the Yeah Group NR and New Richmond Basketball Association (are they the same group?) clamor for? Or how about the insistence of a new high school, new elementary school, converting the existing high school into a middle school and more. This would increase property taxes for every resident including fixed income households, senior citizens and households with no children, through the proverbial roof? Is that some kind of personal agenda? Make everyone else pay for what Laura wants.

And finally, the last question raises the trust issue. Do you trust Deanna Cook-Shannon, who is a current School Board member, with your tax dollars? After all she voted to give Craig Hitchens a $108,000 buyout to leave his job 8 months early. She voted to give Craig Hitchens a $25,000 bonus for his efforts in last years failed $54 million referendum. She voted to give the new interim Superintendent a $750 per diem to serve from this January through June. And she has voted to go into secret sessions of the Board numerous times in violation of the public meeting statutes.

Who do you trust? Good questions Laura!
