Archive for Republicans

…for what he really is, an evangelical nut-job.

The Onion writes:

” ‘I honestly thought he was just playing up to the far-right voters, because that’s what Republicans are supposed to do in the primaries,’ said Grand Rapids, MI resident Dan Banks, who explained he had dismissed as manipulative campaign rhetoric Santorum’s assertion that President Obama would send Christians to the guillotine. ‘But now it’s dawning on me that this guy means it, all of it. Every single thing he says is an accurate depiction of how he sees the world’. . . . ‘So, when he said that Satan was currently attacking the United States, he meant exactly that,’ added Banks. ‘Satan, the devil himself, is attacking the United States. Rick Santorum believes this is a real thing that is actually happening. I…wow. Just wow.’ “

Dan, now do you see why some of us refer to this crowd as evangelical nut-jobs? He is-they are-run for your life from these people!!

A True Visionary

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Bolstered by his win in South Carolina on Saturday, Newt Gingrinch head for Florida promising to deliver a “big idea” speech every day on his vision for the country. Obama and Romney also have their own visions. But none of the candidates for President, including Obama, ever saw the financial calamity, or the debt problems of the United States and Europe, or the problems escalating in the Middle East.

Only one candidate had the foresight to see where government intervention leads. The following is a speech given by Ron Paul in 2002. It appears he is the only true visionary.

I have a prediction to add:

If the Republicans nominate either Romney, Gingrich, or Santorum, then the party will go the way of the Whigs. And you can say Obama-four more years

**This post was originally made on September 25th**

With the announcement today (12/28/2011) some 90 days later, my position is the same. However, now I am faced with supporting a Libertarian candidate. While I will not support the Libertarian party, I will support this man. Gary Johnson will be the first candidate for President of The United States (assuming he gets the L nomination) who I will vote for who is not a Republican.

When you watch the video, it might not hit you right away but it did me. Wanna know why? Because my family goes back 11 generations here in America, and we fought in the Revolutionary War, The War of 1812, The Civil War, WW1 and WW2.. so, by virtue of family heritage I consider myself as part of that 12% and take it seriously..

The balance of the candidates (Republicans) make me want to vomit, but here is a guy who I would be willing to support.

1. His position on taxes is laudable, better than the others, but not perfect.

2. His position on energy is precisely correct – his premise is that we have a supply problem, and until that gets corrected (meaning more domestic production, use of natural gas more, etc,) we ought to ride bikes more… I love that!

3. His position on legalization of certain drugs, e.g. marijuana is sane – unlike all the other candidates (except, perhaps, Ron Paul)

4. His position on immigration is sane: “America is a land of immigrants. Legal immigration should focus on making it easier and simpler for willing workers to come here with a temporary work visa, pay taxes, contribute to society, and fill jobs as the market demands.”

5. He opposes “Net Neutrality.” So do I, and for the same reasons!! “It is not a coincidence that the one element of our
modern economy that has been uniquely left free of government interference has created equally unique growth and transformation. An Internet free of regulation and taxation has produced innovation and enhancements to quality of life almost unparalleled in human history. If the market demands Internet services, speed and access, the market will provide them without any help from the government. The government, with its regulatory foot in the door, will inevitably end up attempting to regulate and referee content, speech, and commerce.”

6. Foreign Policy…. again, I agree with GJ when he states that our military needs to leave BOTH Afghanistan and Iraq. I don’t want to put words in his mouth, but from what I have read it appears he, like me, would like a far far smaller but far far more lethal military that stays close to home and is only used when we are directly and clearly threatened or attacked. Period.

Lastly (I could go on and on here), there is this quote out of the GQ article.. in reference to GJ’s attendence at Porcfest. A local public-radio guy and a local blogger ask if he would mind being interviewed, and they retreat to a smelly back hallway near the men’s room, where he answers questions about his campaign for the presidency while various revelers walk by with bongs and guns.

“A lot of people would say it’s a courageous candidate,” says the radio guy, “who would come to an event where people are walking around openly carrying weapons, there’s gay disco, there’s people smoking marijuana…”

Gary chuckles. “I wouldn’t say I’m a brave candidate for those reasons.” Another chuckle. “Those things don’t bother me at all.”

Quote of the Day

Ana Navarro, of Miami-Dade and an advisor to Jon Huntsman, said Perry is more show than substance.

“Rick Perry is a Texas stud, a real macho-man who looks great in cowboy hat and boots and was supposed to come galloping on his stallion to rescue Republicans and lead us to the promise land,” said Navarro, an advisor to Huntsman’s campaign. “But it’s become increasingly clear he can’t perform. He has electile dysfunction.”

Minnesota Cave-In

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The budget deal reached in Minnesota between the Republican leadership in the Legislature and Democrat Governor Mark Dayton once again proves that so-called conservatives cannot pull the trigger when it comes to reducing the size and intrusion of government. The baseline biennial budget of $35.5 billion increases government outlays more than 10% from the previous two year spending.

Projected revenues for the state over the two years are projected to be between $33 billion and $34 billion. Where is the extra money coming from; more debt of course. The plan has the state borrowing $700 million from projected tobacco settlements.

The Republicans also caved in their plan to cut the 22,000 government non-worker, work force by 15%. It looks as though not one needless non-worker position will be eliminated and it would be a pretty good bet to wager that the non-worker, worker payroll will increase.

Various estimates approximate that non-worker, worker compensation accounts for about 70% of government budgets. How can you expect to control government spending without drastically chopping the headcount? This is the same mistake Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin made. He is trying to decrease or at least hold back the tide of state spending while at the same time preserving the ranks in the bureaucracy.

Unfortunately for Michelle Bachman, she is sorely mistaken to trumpet the Republicans in the Minnesota Legislature as an example of sticking to principles. Somehow, I expect the leadership in the House of Representatives to act no differently.

Republican Logic

Posted by: | Comments (1)

On Friday the Republican controlled House of Representatives voted and rejected a resolution that would have given Obama the authority to deploy US troops in Libya. This comes after the Speaker of the House cried illegality over the operations in Libya and that the President had acted contrary to the Constitution.

In a vote taken immediately after the authorization vote, the House of Representatives voted to reject another resolution that would defund the Libyan operation.

So your against the military action, but vote to keep funding it. This is the same logic the Boehner led House used when Republicans postured against Obamacare, but still continues to fund it in the budget.

And you really think this clan is going to hold fast their opposition to raising the debt ceiling.

What is Your Plan?

Posted by: | Comments (2)

After casting my vote at the County Building, I approached a young man standing outside collecting signatures for the recall of State Senator Shelia Harsdorf. Since this person and his kind are against the actions taken by the Senator and her Republican colleagues for eliminating the state’s financial mess, then he as a representative of the other side in the battle (not a term used loosely) must have a plan to restore fiscal sanity.

“So what is your plan for eliminating the state’s debt and unfunded pension liabilities,” I queried.

His reply came as no surprise. We don’t need to balance the budget by raising taxes on the middle class, cutting education, and eliminating programs for the needy.

“First of all what tax increases are found in the Budget Repair Bill”, I asked. “Are you telling me that making state non-worker, workers (great description of them towncrier) pay for a portion of their benefits is akin to a tax increase.”

He started to answer my question, but I cut him off when he started down the road of saying yes.

“So again what plan does your side have for dealing with the debt?” I continued to press the question.

He continued talking about raising taxes and having people pay their fair share, but admittedly the plan still needs some work.

“Taxing people and doing nothing about spending, how has that worked out for states like Illinois and California?” I said shaking my head. “In other words, you guys have no plan except to continue down the same path to ruin.” Read More→

Was informed of this story and read the JS Online story (here).

The linked story reveals problems on multiple levels. First of all, we have a DUI medal winner here (Let’s call it the “purple heart of drunken driving” and refer to it as PHDD) who’s father is a crony capitalist. Brian Deschane, the PHDD recipient, is a college drop-out who one could surmise couldn’t cut college level work because instead of working his ass off in school he was out getting smashed. So, instead of doing the moral and proper thing as a parent, what does his crony capitalist father do? He rewards his son’s behavior by putting in a good word for him AFTER arranging for massive donations to the Walker political machine! Consider the message this sends folks…just for one cotton pickin minute!!!

Secondly, this whole issue illustrates the obscene situation in state government. The mere fact that there are $75,000 + per year jobs like this to hand out is totally beyond the pale. Rather than eliminate such government nonsense, the Walker crew perpetuates it. I know, this is just one job.. But isn’t that the whole problem?

This story reveals wrongs on so many levels, but once again illustrates and reaffirms my unalterable view of the Wisconsin GOP. It is chock-full O’ nuts! Oh, they occasionally talk a good game but when push comes to shove they retreat, or find themselves without the philosophical basis that would give them the fortitude to actually do the right thing. Frankly, most don’t know what “the right thing” is on balance.

Oh, you say, it’s just a little bit of winner take all-ism by the Walker crew. And after all, all of us GOP people, we all go to church every Sunday, and, you know, we’re all militant pro-lifers. Ergo, we can do this on our watch because, well, we’re just better people.. All of this makes me intensely ill.

Diana Hsieh has it right. She stated, in her direct-and occasionally vulgar-approach that both the Republicans and the Democrats are “evil statist fucks without the slightest rightful claim to power.” (please note this quote is no longer linkable because Diana’s blog has it, and the related comments, categorized as “defunct comments.” Nevertheless, I applaud her on this because it is so often such an honest appraisal. . . . Full-on agreement here.

I could (and may very well) go further with this one, but I want to do some background digging on this particular story.. For now, I will remain pissed off and am sticking to my angle that this is yet another fine example of bald-faced crony capitalist prostitution by the holier-than-thou GOP gang membership.

Do Not Stand on Principle

Posted by: | Comments (0)

nike just do it1 300x300 Do Not Stand on PrincipleA Dane County judge reaffirmed her recent restraining order regarding the Wisconsin Budget Repair Bill that requires government employees in the state to contribute into health and pension plans plus restricting the ability to bargain benefits. In issuing her second stay of the law, the judge upped the ante by indicating any eventual ruling concerning open meeting laws may not come until the end of May. The timing is obvious as it comes after the election of a State Supreme Court Justice and the recall efforts against eight Republican Senators. The Governor and the GOP controlled legislature have several options to avoid a potential block of the legislation.

Upon reconvening the legislative session this week, the Assembly and Senate could simply pass the bill again; though I would certainly add the police and firefighters to the original bill. At least one Democratic Senator has pledged not to run for the border, which set up the present claim in court now. From what I have gathered, the Governor is reluctant to introduce the bill again on the principle that the court has no jurisdiction concerning the rules of the Senate. Read More→

Still Not Enough

Posted by: | Comments (4)

Congressman Paul Ryan introduced a proposal that would cut the Federal budget in excess of $4 trillion over the next ten years. Considering the projected budgets running through 2019 expect to run a cumulative deficit of nearly $10 trillion, the Ryan plan does nothing to stop the sea of red ink pouring out from the federal government. Though a good start, four trillion in cuts is still not enough.

Still Way Short

As I pointed out the other week, spending cuts from proposed budgets need to be at least two trillion dollars in order to decrease the debt. Based on estimates, though I find it foolish to predict anything for more than a day, the Ryan proposal adds $6 trillion on to a debt that presently stands near $15 trillion.

If the Republicans cannot even muster the courage to eliminate $100 billion of spending out $3.7 trillion, then why should anyone believe they can reduce spending by $400 billion a year.

The report by Stephen Moore mentioned in my Sunday Snippet points out the hopelessness of the situation. Anyone with any guts would follow the towncrier’s advice and just shut the whole government down forever.

Playboy Roy Sjoberg

Local horny loony liberal Playboy Roy Sjoberg has begun the process of recalling Senator Sheila Harsdorf. In a recent interview Playboy stated that he considered recent actions by Republicans as “overreaching”. Funny, isn’t that what the married Mr. Sjoberg did when he reached under the table to grab the leg of a married woman?

Capitalism v. Christianity

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The reality is clear, the delusions rampant. At the end of the day, you must pick one or the other for, as Dr. Hsieh adeptly puts it: “ultimately these two cannot be reconciled, one or the other has to go..” Unless, of course, you prefer to live as a self-deluded hypocrit.. which pretty much describes the Republican Party in its current manifestation… As well as the secular left.

Which brings up one of the key points in Dr Hsieh’s podcast. That being if you are a committed Christian your political home is not with the Republicans, but rather and clearly with the Democrats. Democrats who morally defend their collectivist actions and programs (such as, and rather profoundly, the protestors who were arguing “tax the rich”) by an appeal to their Christian ethics actually have the high ground, Republicans who argue the opposite for reasons of long range planning, free markets in education, etc., simply have no moral argument – theirs is full-on subjectivity. Unless, of course, they have a morality premised not on Christianity, but rather individual rights: rational self-interest.

Make your choice, you have no other… and your time is running out.

Beware the Hypocrits

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Scott Walker has described the budget repair bill as politically bold, but modest in its provisions. Well, that may be. However bold this bill is, it is rife with hypocrisy. For Walker and company to NOT include firefighters and law enforcement is wrong. Moreover, it looks really bad as both groups were supporters of Walker last November…

Look folks, either collective bargaining is wrong in the government sector or it isn’t. You can’t pick and choose like this and have any moral credibility, or expect people to see you as fully fair minded and rational. This is once again why I will never call myself a Republican or a Conservative.

If this legislation goes through, it will mark a very short term for both Walker AND many Republicans in Wisconsin. Walker has not to date fully informed the citizens of Wisconsin why collective bargaining within the realm of government workers is immoral. Why? Frankly, I don’t think he has the guts. I remain unconvinced that he has the intellectual capacity to articulate the full argument, one would hope he does but his silence on this is telling.

Government Thug in Chief

Posted by: | Comments (1)

One of the great authorities on the Constitution and American history is Judge Andrew Napolitano. In the following brief interview with Ralph Nader, he describes the tyranny and myth of Abraham Lincoln. Notice the Judge’s hypothesis that the War Between the States was fought over government’s grab for more money.

If the Republicans really believe in liberty, then they need to rename their annual winter party to the Patrick Henry or Thomas Jefferson Day Dinner.

Lincoln the Tyrant

union Republicans Gave Unions Their Rights HistoryWhen Democrat Gaylord Nelson took ownership of the office of Governor in the state of Wisconsin, in 1959, one of the first laws that was presented to him was a law allowing collective bargaining for state and municipal employees. Soon, government unions flourished. So did the Democratic fundraising machine. Soon, Democrats became the dominant political party in Wisconsin. But the little unknown fact was that the Democrats held the majority in the Assembly and the governor’s office but Republicans still ruled the State Senate by a big 20-12 margin. The bill could not possibly have passed without strong bipartisan support. It was Republicans that gave the unions their first taste of power.

Then in 1967 another law was passed to grant collective bargaining rights to state employees. Republicans controlled the Assembly 53-47 and the State Senate 21-12. The governor was Warren P. Knowles, a Republican.

It was the Republican Party who fostered in the era of Unionism in the state of Wisconsin.

Paul versus Paul

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Whenever I hear the name of Congressman Paul Ryan, it brings me back to his justification that government had to do something during the financial plunge. He evoked no free market principles in voting for the auto and financial bailouts.

In an interview yesterday with Larry Kudlow, Ron Paul points out an important distinction between him and Ryan. Listen toward the end of the clip. Regarding interest rates Paul Ryan feels the Federal Reserve should raise them. Ron Paul, on the other hand, says let the free market determine interest rates and keep the central planners out of it. Paul also makes a great point in that a central bank controlling money is part of every transaction we make.

No Central Planning Here
Besides his belief in monetary central planning and bailouts, Paul Ryan voted for No Child Left Behind, Bush’s Medicare folly, the wars, and the Patriot Act. And this is the person the Republicans consider to be the next face of the party.

No Thanks!
