The Charitable Government
ByI had a discussion with a good friend the other day. We spoke of the hurricane victims and the numerous charities that you could send money to. I told my friend that with the current state of welfare and government dependency in this country I feel as though I already donated money to the cause. After all, the federal government was committing $10 Billion right away, with more to come. My friend agreed with this assessment. Therefore I am not giving money to the Red Cross or United Way or whomever might be looking for cash. When they call, I’m going to tell them I gave at the Government.
If you think I’m kidding about our forced generosity, read this article from the Pioneer Press. Please note the quote from a Wisconsin official when asked about the State’s(i.e. taxpayers) ability to give out goodies to people who are relocated to Wisconsin from Louisiana-
State officials brushed aside questions about whether state government can afford the effort, though they may be able to apply for reimbursement from the federal government.
“Our main concern is making sure the people that have arrived here are getting the services they need,” said Lori Getter, a spokeswoman for Wisconsin Emergency Management. “We’ll worry about the financial recoup later.”

For many of these disasters, I’ve felt the same way. This is the
first time I’ve seen someone say it in print.
