Where Were You Before?
ByIt was utterly fascinating to see the anti-referendum letters to the editor in this past week’s edition of the Hudson School District Propaganda Paper, otherwise known as the Hudson Star-Obfuscator. Isn’t writing letters that voice an opinion after the vote the same as shutting the barn door after the horses have left? There was one particular letter that has left me, shall we say in polite terms, miffed. It was the letter written by Jesse Garza, an active member of the St. Croix Republican Party.
In his letter, Mr. Garza is abhorred at the tactics of the school district and the date which was selected for the referendum vote. Did Mr. Garza just happen to awake from a deep slumber? Why did he not write and vocalize his disdain for the actions of school board well before last week’s letter? Where were you Jesse?
Mr. Garza should take no offense to my questions; for his actions are what is typical and expected of Republicans on the local level. The Republicans thrust their full effort on a state-wide race that was lost before it ever begun. They were so obsessed with the governor’s race that pertinent and far-reaching local tax issues simply were not on the radar screen until after the fact.
The facts concerning state-wide races should now be crystal clear; a Republican, even a rino, cannot win. The two latest Presidential outcomes and this past gubernatorial election are evident to this fact. George Bush lost narrowly twice in the state of Wisconsin as did Mark Green. The difference basically came down to Dane County where the Republican left with over a 90,000 vote deficit or approximately 5% of the total state vote; game over by the time you get to St. Croix County. And even if a Republican candidate was to run that appealed to the voters of Dane County, the true conservatives would stay home or even might view the Democrat more favorably. The result would still be the same.
Government employees vote for more government; and the largest growth of government employees is in government education. A point that seems lost on Republican leadership, but not on the Democrats. While Jesse and his brethren spend time and effort on races they cannot win, the socialists have a clear field at the local level, including school board races. So while the faithful were putting up Mark Green signs, the other side was plotting a successful tax increase.
It is the Republican Party that supposedly upholds the idea of the Constitution. But where were the local leaders when the Constitution was trampled on during a June 14, 2005 school board meeting? Where was the outrage at police actions? Where was your letter then, Mr. Garza? Nowhere, that is where.
If the local party spends one second or one penny supporting the likes of Shelia Harsdorf; it is one second or one penny too much. If they spend one year or ten thousand dollars on local school district elections; it is one year or ten thousand dollars too little. It is literally a fight for every square inch of classroom and the other side knows it.

Itâs time to accept responsibility for our own failed strategies. All we had to do was copy exactly what defeated the referendum 3 years ago. The Yesers simply copied the No winning strategy. We barely attempted to copy our own winning strategy from 3 years ago. Last time, we went door-to-door; this time, the Yesers went door-to-door. Last time, we had simple informative pieces in mailers; this time, they had several âinformativeâ pieces in mailers (albeit paid by taxpayers); last time, we had a recent Republican win in the elections; this time, the Democrats had a winning mood that translated into wins in the elections. The Tax-Them-Til-They-Drop Crowd knew this elementary school was unneeded and putting forth this referendum was a test caseâif they could win an unneeded elementary school built on the backs of the real market-driven employers and employees of this district, they will be emboldened to go for what many misguided people believe are real needs in a middle school and high school without skipping a beat.
Theyâve got their own money and our money to burn, with no accountability because of the government school monopoly. It was no different when this country was founded. The King of England had all the money and militia, the revolutionaries didnât. So why did those early Colonists win? Because they knew if England won, they would lose their freedom and would be taxed without representation. Do any of us have the real Patriotism thatâs needed to defeat this ongoing socialism packaged in government education? Only those willing to be informed know the truth. We know what the obstacles areâthe Yesers, being the largest non-market-driven employer in Hudson, have a built-in Yes vote of between 3,000-3,500 votes. Thatâs what the Nos have to overcome. We didnât. It doesnât matter how much we lost byâwe lostâthey wonâthis time. Will it be different next time?
Take it easy, Spirit, all is not lost. In the race for the 29th Assembly District, Kerry Kittel, local WEAC gadfly, New Richmond high school teacher, ran against John Murtha, businessman.
Murtha is a successful business and family man. He is squeaky clean. With help from the Wisconsin Democrat Party, Kittel tried to connect Murtha to the rascally Republican party and all those bad things Democats say they did.
When asked if he (Kittel) would support a bill to move the teacher’s health plan into the state employee’s health plan for a savings of $100 million, he said no, the plans should be negotiated on the local level. Talk about a WEAC hack.
Kittel’s magic solution was a plan to eliminate the first $60,000 in assessed value to cut property taxes. The cost of $700 million would be made up by closing loopholes which were never explained.
Voters picked up on this and Murtha won by a wide margin.
As for Jesse Garza, working on the local level for Mark Green, he wouldn’t say anything Green didn’t want during the election. All he could do is suggest talking points. It was Green’s show.
As for a little bit of common sense consider the St Croix GOP Lincoln Day Dinner in February. Jason Lewis (KTLK, 100.3mhz, 5-7pm, M-F) will be keynote speaker.
Spirit is absolutely correct is his commentary. Having Jason Lewis at the Lincoln Day Dinner will do nothing to bolster the image of the Republican Party. After all won’t they have Jay Griggs and Kitty Rhoades in the audience along with others who led the way for more government spending here in Hudson?
Jason Lewis would not support three-fourths of what is going on in the land of RINO party. I can’t believe he even took that speaking gig.
