Wisconsin Fails To Teach History…

By

According to Wisconsin’s Model Academic Standards for Social Studies, â??In order to ensure our survival as a free nation, students at all grade levels in Wisconsin are required to learn about the principles and ideals upon which the United States is founded and understand the world in which they live.â? The framework is organized into five strands: geography, history, political science and citizenship, economics, and behavioral sciences.

How are they doing?

According to the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation who rated each of the states standards and have rated Wisconsin with a big “F”. According to the study Wisconsin scoring rank breakdown is as follows:
Curriculum: 26
Instructional: 10
Total: 36

Grade: F

By the end of twelfth grade, students are expected to â??select instances of scientific, intellectual, and religious change in various regions of the world at different times in history and discuss the impact those changes had on beliefs and values.â? Besides making no sense, this assertion is untethered to the limited content included within the framework. Before discussing the impact of changes throughout the world, for example, it is necessary to say what those changes, in fact, are.

This doesn’t surprise me. In a reply to JB on 7/16, 8:33am, I said,

The New Richmond High School has some good advanced placement courses (not virtual) including A. P. History. It looks like this one teaches stuff students will have to put up with in college from liberal professors who have a hard time finding anything they like about America.

In retrospect, I should have said that NRHS has some good A. P. course, but NOT history.
